Cavemen Wake Up to Beat Japan

By Deb Mashburn
—Posted November 8, 2005

Although it was already 10:30 in the morning, it took the Cavemen a few innings to wake up in their game on Saturday again Japan.

Since Japan was the home team, the Cavemen batted first. Ron Herriott hit a nice single just in front of the left fielder. Japan put down the next two batters, then Scott Hicks walked. With two men on base, the Cavemen couldn't score. With the first batter out, Japan managed to score one on the short stop's triple to center field. The short stop then scored on their first baseman' single to right field. So, Japan took the lead 2-0.

The 2nd inning was scoreless. Japan put down the Cavemen 1-2-3 in the top of the 3rd and managed to score on a single to left field, increasing their lead 3-0. The 4th inning was much the same as the 3rd, just with different batters. Cavemen went down 1-2-3, and Japan scored one on an error, now leading 4-0.

After four scoreless innings, the Cavemen managed to find their groove. With two men on, Mark Louw hit a grounder to the short stop who overthrew it to first base. Two runs score on this error. Louw then scored on Donnie Cortimilia's double down the left field line. With this run at the Japanese, the Cavemen were only down by one, 3-4, and maintained their position by putting Japan's first three batters down.

In the 6th, the Cavemen got a couple on from Japan errors, then knocked three home with well-placed singles. These runs put them ahead 6-4. With no response from Japan in the bottom of the 6th, the Cavemen pulled further ahead with four doubles and a triple to score five runs. Japan couldn't put any offense together in the bottom of the 7th. So, the Cavemen win 11-4.

The Cavemen, 3-1 on the season, face the Mad Dogs, 2-1, in their next three outings: next Saturday and then a double-header December 3. See the schedule below.
