Cavemen Hit the Mad Dogs
By Deb Mashburn Be forewarned, the writer admits this is a rewrite of this week's Mad Dogs article. She just changed the first two and the last two paragraphs. The Cavemen are 4-1 on the season after their 17-13 win over the Mad Dogs, Saturday, November 12. With two of their regular players, Ron Herriott and Dan Mulay, out coaching the Mad Dogs, the Cavemen still managed to handle the Mad Dogs. The Mad Dogs batted first and let the Cavemen know they were serious about this game. Third baseman Lucas Grudda and Right fielder Alex McLane both got on base with singles. After right-center fielder Andrew Mahoney got out, Cavemen pitcher Scott Hicks didn't want to give Timberlake anything to hit, so he walked him and loaded the bases. First baseman Travis Julian hit a double to right-center field and scored, allowing Grudda, McLane, and Timberlake all to score. The pitcher put out catcher Alex Reed at first, but Mad Dog pitcher Daven Ellenberger hit a double to right field, allowing Julian to score. Ellenberger was left on 2nd at the end of their at bat. The Cavemen 2nd baseman Donnie Cortimilia was the lead-off batter and he hit a single down the 3rd base line. He got to take another base when the 3rd baseman over threw the ball to 1st. The Mad Dog outfielders put out the next two batters. Pitcher Scott Hicks hit a ground-rule double into the pile of rubbish in left field, allowing Cortimilia to score. Left fielder Dave Decker got on base when the third baseman failed to make the play at first, and Hicks then scored first baseman Guy Penneys single to right field. At the end of the inning, both Decker and Penney were left on base, and the Mad Dogs were leading 4-2. 2nd baseman Brett Amstutz led off the 2nd inning with a nice hit down the middle. He was later thrown out at 2nd when Tyler Timberlake hit to the pitcher. Grudda hit a single to left-center. McLane flew out to the same spot, but it was long enough to allow T. Timberlake to score. Mahoney hit a triple down the middle, allowing Grudda to score. K. Timberlake hit a 2-run homer over the right field wall. Julian was put out at first by the short stop. Caveman Paul Bradbury got on base with a single to right field, and it looked like he was going to be stranded there as Timberlake threw the next two batters out at first. Cortimilia managed to get on base on a fielder's choice, and Bruce Adamson walked. With bases loaded, Jim Timberlake hit a grand slam homerun over the right field wall. Hicks ended up on third base on his single to right field then scored on Dave Decker's single. The Mad Dogs put out Penney at first to shut down their rally. The Mad Dogs were still leading after 2, 8-7. The Mad Dogs lost their lead in the third. They did manage to score left fielder Eric Debrah on T. Timberlake's single down the first base line, but they left two runners stranded. Although the Cavemen hesitated, they did manage to pull ahead. Schultz and catcher Mark Louw scored on Cortimilia's hit was dropped in left field. Cortimilia then scored on Adamson's single to left field. Left-center fielder Tyler Timberlake saved the inning when he caught his dad's hit on the 2nd bounce out of the left fielder's glove. The Mad Dogs were now behind, 9-10. The Mad Dogs scored three in the top of the 4th. McLane hit a double to left-center. Mahoney flew out to right center. Then McLane scored on K. Timberlake's double to right center. Julian got on and advanced Timberlake to 3rd. Timberlake scored on Reed's short hit down the 1st base line. Julian was able to score when Ellenberger sacrificed to right field. The Mad Dogs again led, 12-10. Although the Mad Dogs made some changes to their outfield, they couldn't contain the Cavemen. The Cavemen scored 7 runs in the bottom of the 4th, starting with Hicks' homerun. Decker flew out to right-center, but the next six batters all scored. The last two runs scored on Hicks' ground rule double that rolled behind the piles of debris in left field. The Cavemen regained the lead 17-12. No one scored in the 5th inning. With time running out, the teams began a 6th inning. The Mad Dogs needed a big inning to bridge the gap. K. Timberlake scored on Aisenbrey's RBI, but Aisenbrey was left stranded. The Cavemen didn't need to bat, the Mad Dogs had lost, 13-17. Cortimilia leads the Cavemen with a .706 batting average and 12 RBIs; followed by Mulay batting .700 and 3 RBIs; Herriott, batting .625 and 6 RBIs; Mahoney batting 500 and 7 RBIs. The Cavemen face the Mad Dogs in a double-header December 3 after two weekends off. See the schedule below.
