Cavemen Put Down by Senegal

By Deb Mashburn
—Posted October 18, 2005

The Cavemen take a 11-12 loss from Senegal A Saturday, October 15.

In this first game of the "pre-season," the Cavemen met the reformed Senegal A team. Some heavy hitters have returned to Senegal A when the Patriots and Silver Spirits combined into the Silver Pats this year.

The Cavemen started out strong with a 3-run homer in the first inning by Scott Hicks. Senegal A answered those three runs with two of their own. But this was just a warm up for what was to come. In the 2nd inning, the Cavemen had five base hits, a triple, and were able to score 6 runs with a little help from a walk and a Senegalese error. Senegal A tried to keep up and scored five runs, including two homeruns, but were still behind, 7-9, at the end of two.

The cavemen scored three more in the top of the 3rd before their bats fell silent. Although they put Senegal A down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the 4th, Senegal scored a run in the 4th on a homerun by Goshe (his 2nd for the day) and four in the 5th, including a homerun by Steffan, to tie the Cavemen at 12.

With time running out, the Cavemen had opportunities to score in the 6th inning, but left two runners stranded. In the bottom of the 6th, the Cavemen had two outs on Senegal A when Patrice came to bat. He looked at one strike, then he put one out of the park, ending the game 13-12.

In his pep-talk at the beginning of the game, Coach Ron Herriott explained to the Cavemen the three parts of softball season: the pre-season, which lasts from now through January; the season, which is the end of season tournament; and post-season, February's West African Invitational Softball Tournament (WAIST). So he's not too worried about this "pre-season" loss. They have a lot of time to reach their peak.
