Cavemen Apply 10-Run Rule Against Japan

By Deb Mashburn
—Posted October 25, 2005

The Cavemen look like they hit their peak with a 17-5 win over Japan Saturday, October 22.

The Cavemen team at the ball park last Saturday looked like the heavy hitters that won last year's West African Invitational Softball Tournament (WAIST). The batters were able to place the ball just about anywhere they wanted to put it, which was in the holes of the Japan outfield following Lisa Hicks' advice, "Hit them where they're not." Lisa is the wife of Cavemen Pitcher Scott Hicks.

The Cavemen led off the first inning with six hits and three runs. The Cavemen fielders put Japan out 1-2-3 that inning. Then the Cavemen applied their wearing-out-the-pitcher technique by batting 15 times during the 2nd inning. They scored 10 runs on 5 hits, 2 walks, and many errors. After taking care of Japan in the bottom of the inning, the cavemen led 13-0.

The Japan defense woke up a bit in the 3rd inning and put the Cavemen down quickly, but their offense just couldn't kick in, so the 3rd inning was scoreless. The Cavemen scored four more in the 4th. The bats for Japan finally came alive in the 4th and they were able to score four runs on five hits. So the cavemen were leading 17-5.

The fifth inning was again scoreless, but after 5 innings the umpire applied the Mercy Rule which states "teams leading by 10 runs after the five innings shall be the winner."

The Cavemen meet the Silver Pats next Saturday, October 29, at noon. Will they stay at their peak? Come and see.
