Cavemen Manage to Stay Ahead of Silver Pats
But It Isn't Pretty

The Cavemen game against the Silver Pats wasn't nearly as close as their winning 17-16 score might indicate. The Cavemen led the entire game with a considerable lead, until they almost lost it in the 6th inning.

In the first inning and with two outs, the Cavemen allowed the Silver Pats to score 3 runs on a homerun by short stop Brandon. The Cavemen answered with 6 runs of their own, scored off of five doubles and a single. So the Cavemen established the lead, 6-3.

The Silver Pats had two singles in the second, but weren't able to capitalize on them and left both runners stranded. With two men on, Jim Timberlake hit a homerun over the right field wall. Two other runners scored, increasing the Cavemen lead to 11-3.

The Silver Pats tried to make a run at the Cavemen, but after a two-runner homer by left-center fielder Sidy and one more run, their attempt fizzled. The Cavemen left two men on in the third, but still led, now 11-6.

The Cavemen allowed one Silver Pats runner on base with an error, but put the next three batters down with some tough defense. The Cavemen bats were hot again in the 4th. Taking advantage of some significant errors by the Silver Pats infielders, the Cavemen scored six, increasing their lead 17-6. That would seem like a strong enough lead to guarantee a win, but it almost wasn't.

The Silver Pats scored three in the top of the 5th, and the Cavemen left two stranded. This inning ended with the Cavemen lead dwindling to 17-9. Silver Pats Pitcher Jerry Mitchell left the game in the fifth inning after sustaining an arm injury while fielding a ball.

With time running out, the 6th inning would be the last inning. If the Cavemen held on to their lead, the game would end after the top half.  The Silver Pats were determined to make a last inning rally. The Cavemen got the first batter out, but the Silver Pats hit a couple of singles to get two runners on. Then 1st baseman Dave McKee hit a triple, and two runs scored. McKee then scored when the next batter, 2nd baseman Greg... hit a single up the middle. Four more batters scored on singles up the middle and an error, before the Cavemen were able to end the inning with three outs. These seven runs nearly undid the Cavemen, who managed to hold on to the lead, 17-16.

The Cavemen looked very good the first five innings, but what happened in the 6th? Were they over-confident with their lead or are they beginning to show their age? Actually, Ron Herriott took himself out of left-center field, and the Silver Pats took advantage of the new guy and hit at him without mercy.
