Don't start with the glossy brochures or Internet pages. You'll be overwhelmed with information, and let's face it -- they'll all look good. Start by answering a some basic questions:

  1. What do you want to study? What majors are of interest to you?

  2. Where do you want to be located? Near family? Big city? Rural area?

  3. What size school would you prefer? What size classes? Relationships with profs?

  4. Are you looking for a Christian college? A state university? A community college?

  5. Sports? Music? Journalism? Student Gov't? Are certain activities important to you?

After you've given some thought to your preferences, you are ready to start looking at websites and catalogs.

Unsure of your major?

Try to narrow your interests down to 2 or 3 areas, and then find schools that offer majors or minors in ALL of those areas.

Not able to visit campus?

It will be very important to connect with someone who’s been a student at the school who can answer your questions.  Campus reps are helpful, but to get the “whole story” – talk to alumni.

Where's the money?

Don’t make finances your first consideration – you’ll need to apply and be accepted before a school will make a financial aid offer – and it’s only then that you’ll know whether you can afford school.

*There are some schools that are “work and pay as you go.”

Check out College of the Ozarks and Berea College.

Where to look?

There are college search engines that can help narrow your choices:

www.collegeboard.com

www.whatsthebest-college.com

www.fastweb.com

www.christianconnector.com

www.campustours.com

www.collegeview.com

College Rankings?

There are several organizations that rank colleges: Peterson’s, U.S. News & World Report, Kaplan, Barron’s, etc.  You may want to look at those rankings, but be advised that they are not entirely reliable, and many excellent schools never make those lists. Using rankings is no substitute for doing your own research on a school.

Check out www.ctcl.com for more info on rankings.

Professional Services?

NEVER pay an online service or individual to do college searches or scholarship searches. All the information you need is available for FREE, either in libraries or on the internet.

Still Overwhelmed?

There IS a mountain of information out there to wade through.  After reading through the information on this page, make a list of your questions and plan to sit down with your parents to discuss the issues.   Make an appointment to come to the Guidance Office to talk through the selection process.   Pray about discerning what plan God has in mind for you.
