Dakar Academy has been granted the right to administer CLEP computer-based tests, starting in January 2006.

WHAT IS CLEP?
CLEP is a College Board program that allows students to demonstrate their mastery of college-level material in introductory subjects. Through CLEP examinations, students can earn college credit from participating institutions, and/or earn exemptions from introductory courses, allowing them to move ahead to more advanced courses.

COST AND REGISTRATION

$55 per test plus $15 administration fee per testing date. Registration may be made by paying in the Business Office and presenting the receipt to Mrs. Aisenbrey. She will have a registration form for you to fill out. Non-DA students must present a dollar check made out to Dakar Academy.
Photo-ID required (passport, carte d’identite) for non-DA students. We are test center #7523.

TEST DATES, DEADLINES AND TIMES

The tests will be administered Saturday, January 14, 2006 and Saturday, May 27, 2006 in the DA computer lab. Testing begins at 9 a.m. with additional tests at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. as needed. Students may take up to 3 tests per test session. *Only 9 students may test at a time, so register early to ensure getting a space. Registration deadlines: December 16, 2005 for the January test, May 19, 2006 for the May test.

TEST RESULTS

Scores are received automatically and printed out in the computer lab and are submitted electronically to the school indicated during registration. The CLEP program keeps scores for 20 years. Additional score reports cost $20.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN AP (Advanced Placement) and CLEP?
Advanced Placement courses and exams are more rigorous and may earn more credit, as well as being accepted by more colleges. CLEP exams are easier to pass but are not accepted everywhere. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO CHECK WITH COLLEGES ABOUT THEIR CLEP POLICIES BEFORE TAKING THE EXAMS. Schools may limit the number of CLEP credits that can be earned as well as limiting the subjects that are accepted. Students who are capable of doing well in AP courses are encouraged to take the AP exams rather than a CLEP exam in the same subject. There is no benefit in taking both exams in the same subject.

HOW TO PREPARE FOR A CLEP EXAM

Tere are study guides available for each subject. A general CLEP Official Study Guide is on display in the DA library, and Mrs. Aisenbrey has study guides for the following subjects in her office: Natural Sciences, Biology, American Literature, American Government and Introductory Sociology. Sample questions for all tests are available at www.collegeboard.com.

TESTIMONIAL
“I took CLEP exams during the summer before entering college and earned a full year’s credit enabling me to graduate in 3 years instead of 4. Earning CLEP credit saved me a great deal of time and money and also allowed me to start classes in my major immediately. I highly recommend CLEP exams to high school students who are earning A’s and B’s in subjects where DA does not offer AP classes.”

—Debbie Aisenbrey, Guidance Counselor
