Dakar Academy Library

Just as exercise is important for a healthy body, reading is important for a healthy mind. Reading can open a window to the world, spark imagination and inspire us to achieve great things. Parents can help foster a love of reading in their child by reading a book together as a family. Pick a favorite story and read a chapter or two after dinner or before bed each night.

To help get the pages turning, Dakar Academy librarian Michele Wurschmidt shares her insider knowledge on the most popular selections at our school’s library during the 2019-20 academic year:

  • Junior Fiction (grades 1-5) - ‘Magic Tree House’ series by Mary Pope Osborne, ‘According to Humphrey’ series by Betty G. Birney, ‘Geronimo Stilton’ series by Geronimo Stilton

  • Middle Fiction (grades 5-8) - ‘Wings of Fire’ series by Tui T. Sutherland, ‘Diary of a Wimpy Kid’ series by Jeff Kinney, ‘Percy Jackson & the Olympians’ series by Rick Riordan

  • Fiction (grades 8+) - ‘Ender’s Game’ series by Orson Scott Card, ‘The Lunar Chronicles’ series by Marissa Meyer, ‘Fairy Tale Romance’ series by Melanie Dickerson

“I love to help kids find a new book and then hear their thoughts about it after they finish,” says Mrs. Wurschmidt. “I enjoy hearing about what people like to read and why. They are always so proud and can't wait to jump into the next one. “

Are you wondering what the DA librarian does when the campus is closed, as it is now? One task on Mrs. Wurschmidt’s list is to read and review books that have questionable content to decide if they are appropriate to go on the shelves or what grade levels they should be assigned. However, in her own time she is currently reading ‘Making Peace with Change’ by Gina Brenna Butz.

Michele Wurschmidt is the librarian at Dakar Academy Central. Her background is in graphic design and web design, with 15 years of experience in administration. Prior to coming to Dakar, she lived and worked in South Africa.
